Anyone who has entered retirement or is entertaining the idea of retirement should watch this 13+ minute TEDx talk, by Dr. Riley Moynes.
I can attest that these phases are real, although one may not go through them exactly the way Dr. Moynes described them. For me, Phases one to three are different emotions I experienced simultaneously in the same phase, all intertwined, feeling one emotion one moment and another emotion another moment, back and forth on repeat.
The five losses are also real, and I experienced them all. In my next writing on this subject, I will share how I have sat with the feelings of these losses, to truly understand them, accept them, and find resolutions. Until then, whether you are on this journey or not, or better yet, have already entered Phase Four, please share your experiences via comment.
I really enjoyed that video, more so now that I've "exited" Phase 2 and am actively thrashing around in Phase 3. In my experience, his phases are spot on.
Dear Yi Xue. Thank you for your Substack! I had not thought what retirement planning might be from an immigrant's/newer-generation American viewpoint. I listened to the Dr. Riley TedTalk you recommended--we have some psychological changes to expect! Lol.
I am not yet in the unpaid phase of life, but have been planning for it and feel happy and excited about what I might be able contribute to the world once I have a free schedule. Is that Phase Four? Lol. May we both find our calling. Best wishes!
