Shanghai is certainly a charming city. The high end restaurant surely is pricy. The food is presented artfully which is pleasing to the eyes, but hurtful to the wallet. :):)
And yet there certainly is a range of options that would fit for many wallet sizes. Just as life can be lived many different ways, we can be comfortable if we chose to. When we realize that inner power, is when we really experience freedom.
Thanks for sharing these mouthwatering moments from your trip – it’s like a virtual feast for the senses! Your unique perspective, being both a former Shanghai local and a visitor, adds depth to your exploration of the city. It’s a wonderful trip through the vibrant tapestry of Shanghai’s life and flavors.
Thanks, Janice! For my next trip back (whenever that will be) I hope I can stay longer and dig deeper, and get pass the presentation and taste to get to the soul of the food, the people, and the culture.
What a gorgeous post! A real feast for the eyes and it brought lots of savoury memories back, making my mouth water. You also capture the extremes of either end of the culinary spectrum so well. I'd love to know more about your grandfather's cooking! And I've been to Ningbo a couple of times, too. This piece has been a bit like time travel for me. Thank you!
Thank you, Jeffrey! What a wonderful feeling that my writing (and my love of Shanghai) has managed to find a confidant 知音 in the English Republic of Letters :-)!

There is much more than cooking I want to write about my grandfather. I started the "Stories from a faraway land" series (https://immigrantsjourney.substack.com/s/stories-from-a-faraway-land/archive?sort=new), with the intent to tell the stories of my family. I am working on a story about my uncle, next will be my grandfather. Until then, maybe you'd like to read about my aunt and her cooking https://open.substack.com/pub/immigrantsjourney/p/happy-birthday-auntie-mommy?r=17ocys&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web.
Have a great weekend!
Thank you! I'm looking forward to reading more. And have a great weekend yourself!
