I enjoyed reading this Yi and I never have enough book recommendations 😊. Sounds like the Haidt's book is right up my alley. Going off to get that into my Kindle now!

You and I are alike in our reading habits. I, too, read slow and am picky. I abandon books. I've heard read to page 50, which is fascinating, but I read until I stop caring and that can even mean half way through!

I'm also trying to bring more focus and intentionality in my life, so I'm interested in your efforts. For me, it has to do with organizing on paper and telling myself to not open work email or chat, etc, when I need to get work done. We'll see how it goes! And yay to Haidt, I'm a fan.

Abandon, that's the word! I was too afraid to use it—how presumptuous of me to abandon these highly acclaimed works from these highly accomplished writers! But you are right I abandon books often lol! Thanks, Lani for stating the fact!

Thank you for the recommendations!! I am curious to know if moving certain apps to the last slide of your phone has successfully made you open them less?

Yes, it has, although not to the extent I was hoping for! It is time to look into the other "hacks" Eyal recommended :).

Thank you, Yi Xue, for such a thoughtful review essay. I really enjoyed this and found the quote about the ship and shipwreck really interesting. I think I'll get the Haidt.

I'm a Mahler fan and look forward to enjoying the Bernstein version. It won't seem long to me. I watched Tristan und Isolde here in Tokyo yesterday...which was just wonderful. This was the first time I'd had the chance to see a performance of the whole piece.

I have only attended a live performance of Wagner’s opera once, years ago, and I still remember I was lamenting why there were so few young people in the audience (and the old gentleman next me kept nodding off lol)!

I am also a Mahler fan and I have attended several Mahler concerts in NYC while I was living in New Jersey. Now I am living on the beautiful and mellow PNW, I don’t miss the traffic noise and arrogance and smell of NYC, but I do miss its rich cultural and art scene, terribly!

Thanks for liking my post!

Yes, I also noticed that the average age of people at the Wagner yesterday was probably late sixties. It was a Friday afternoon, and the tickets are expensive. One reason I'm in Tokyo is because of the cultural and art scene. It's also a remarkably liveable city, given its size.

I borrowed it from our local library (digital) before a purchase decision. 😊
